59 Minutes of Tribal Jogging

I first heard of Afro Celt Sound System from the single they did with Peter Gariel, When You’re Falling. Intrigued by the possibilities inherent in combining African rhythms with Celtic melodies and instruments, I decided to check them out further—and I discovered that, and more. The whole thing has a party/rave atmosphere, and many of the songs have African lyrics as well. This makes for great dancing as well as jogging—though of course I’ve found more moderately-paced songs to let you catch your breath. Another New Millennium Flatliner

Sometimes I can’t get enough of a good thing. This March I presented a Flatliner list—one where all but the beginning, ending, and middle songs are nearly the same pace—composed of artists who’ve made the first decade of the millennium truly special. This time the wog is a bit slower—a slow jog pace rather than a moderate jog pace—but the artists are just as awesome. Woggers of the World, Unite!

Don’t get me wrong, I love American and British pop music. But sometimes I get a hankering for something a bit different. So lately I’ve been checking out music from different places around the world, particularly Africa and Central Europe, and have discovered some fabulous stuff that makes for a truly international workout. This week’s wog features, among others, the hyperkinetic Afro Celt Sound System’s unique cultural fusions, a truly supernatural Finnish folk song by the gorgeously talented Värttinä, and two irresistible “gypsy punk” pieces off the very danceable Gypsy Groove CD.
